Usually when I think about "forgetting yourself" while appreciating art, I call it escapism. I hadn't thought of it in terms of activity v. passivity. Well, I hadn't thought about art appreciation as active and therefore the opposite of doomscrolling, which I always recognized as passive.

Yeah this is a new idea for me too. Not sure if it's the right way of framing it, but one of the main things I'm trying to explore right now is the difference in quality and outcome between (as I'm thinking of it) these two forms of self-forgetting. They're both sorts of flow state, and I think escape is a nice way of framing it, but one of them (aesthetic engagement) I take to be more akin to conversation, and so more actively escaping *into* something that can speak back and offer up ideas and personality. The other is just falling into the void.
